CONSTRUCTION I
TRANSFORMATION OF AN APARTMENT
BLOCK
CONVERSION OF AN ATTIC INTO AN APARTMENT
FITTING IN OF A GLASS ELEVATOR
(a) Location:
The existing apartment block is located in the city of Geneva,
on the right side of the lake, on a small and quiet street
behind the main train station.

(b) Layout:
The building belongs to a complex of apartment blocks built
at the beginning of the 20th century. All 6 floors are occupied
by apartments, there are no office premises. The apartments,
mostly 2 room ones, have windows on both sides, opening onto
a courtyard in the back.
(c) Concept
and programme:
The building needs to undergo renovation. The technical equipment
is out of date, the facades are in bad shape and the roof
is subject to repeated leaks.

Since renovation
work has to be undertaken, the attic will be converted into
living spaces, i.e. two new apartments of 3.5 rooms. The basement
rooms will be reorganised to provide cellars to replace the
attic storage space (new gas central heating system, removal
of cistern, new laundry room).
Roof openings will
provide light for the new apartments (sky lights and gable
windows).

An elevator
is to be installed in the stairway. To compensate for the lack
of space, the elevator shaft will be fitted into an opening
in the back facade and project partly outward. Users will nevertheless
have to go half a storey up or down to gain access to the elevator.
