CONSTRUCTION OF TWO TIMBER CHALETS

(a) Location:
The parcel of land is located on the outskirts of a small village in the Val d'Hérens (canton of Valais), approximately 1,800 meters up a slope exposed to the south.

(b) Site implantation:
The two chalets are set slightly at angles with regards one to the other. A dirt path leading to the alp provides access - on foot.
The chalets are almost identical, except for the programme which has been tailored to answer each user's specific needs.

(c) Concept:
The volumetry recalls the old "mazot", the typical small mountain stable and barn. Three floors have been fitted up. The lower floor opens onto the slope, while the back of the chalet leans into the mountainside. All-round glazing of the higher level provides natural lighting.

Day-living areas are located on the ground floor, whereas bedrooms occupy the top level.

The facades are made of massive larch timbers, assembled by traditional techniques. All the construction elements make up for the important shifts due to the gradual settling in of this type of timber, a shift estimated around 5%, i.e. up to 15 cm per level.

The hard and incompressible elements, such as pipes, glass, tiling etc., are fitted in so as to allow the necessary shifting due to the settling in of the entire building.

The roof is made out of stone covering, in keeping with the local tradition.

(d) Programme:
- Living and dining room
- Open kitchen
- Two upper bedrooms, one lower bedroom
- Upper room with bath, sink, and toilet
- Lower shower with sink
- Separate toilet with sink
- Cellar
- Technical room and storage space

(e) Building site:
The chalets were built a year apart, by the same companies. The construction of the second chalet took less time, since the first one served as an example.

(f ) Surface:

Surface:
Living quarters: m2 116
Terrace: m2 25
