BUILDING A CHALET IN THE MOUNTAINS

Place : Finhaut, Valais (CH)

Altitude : 1'320 meters

Overlooking the village, the land is uphill exposed to South. The chalet is surrounded by fields and forests. The access is using the road going up to the " barrage d'Emosson ".

The stunning Alps of the Mont-Blanc mountains, their peaks and ice fields can be admired in the distant panorama. Right below the chalet are the first houses of the village.

Architectural Concept: The chalet base is a perfect square. Despite the uphill land, all access from the outdoor to the indoor are on the same level, because the inside levels follow the natural slope.
.

Inside, the floors are disposed in half-level around the empty center space which stands in the middle of the chalet from bottom to top. In this empty center space, width 2 meters, stand the stairs. The light is flowing from the windows of the roof and from two large openings high and narrow on each side of the empty center space.

.

Bedrooms have 4 small windows each allowing the view like seeing a framed painting. The heating system is provided by a traditional wood burner ; it warms the water which is sent to the whole house. This system is exceptionnaly inexpensive.

All outside walls are made in plain larch wood.

.

Inside can be found following the natural slope of the land, 5 floors distributed on half levels:

a) lower first floor: living room and basement.

b) higher first floor: entry, toilet, dining room, kitchen.

c) second floor: 2 bedrooms, bathroom and toilet.

d) third floor: 1 bedroom, sauna, library.

e) attic: storing space.
